TEF Canada Speaking Section B: How to Convince Someone

Section B asks you to argue to convince. The official format is a 10-minute section within the 15-minute oral expression test.

A practical argument sequence

Start with your position. Then give a reason. Add a concrete example. Listen to the other person's concern and answer it. If useful, offer a compromise or a second benefit.

What makes an argument easier to follow?

• One main point at a time.
• Clear transitions.
• Specific examples.
• Responses that address the other person's point.

Practise changing the topic while keeping the same argument structure. That is more transferable than memorising topic-specific paragraphs.
