French Connectors: How to Connect Your Ideas Naturally

Learn how to use French connectors for cause, contrast, consequence, examples and nuance without making your French sound memorised.

A connector is useful only when it clarifies the relationship between two ideas. The goal is not to collect fifty expressions; it is to make a small number of them automatic.

Cause

Parce que, car, puisque and étant donné que can introduce a reason. Choose according to context and register rather than treating them as interchangeable decorations.

Consequence

Donc is natural and common. Ainsi, par conséquent and c’est pourquoi can be useful when the relationship needs to be made explicit.

Les transports sont fiables ; par conséquent, je peux me déplacer facilement.

Contrast

Mais is not a weak connector. It is often the most natural choice. For a more explicit contrast, use cependant, en revanche or toutefois where appropriate.

Example and clarification

Par exemple, notamment and en particulier help move from an abstract statement to something concrete.

Nuance

Natural argumentation often needs qualifiers: dans certains cas, cela dépend, en général, dans la mesure où. Nuance can make an answer more precise without making it longer for the sake of length.

The connector test

Before adding a connector, say the two sentences without it. Then ask: What relationship am I showing? Cause? Contrast? Result? Example? If you cannot name the relationship, you probably do not need the connector.
