How to Sound More Natural When Speaking French
Move beyond word-for-word translation with practical habits for rhythm, fillers, chunks, connectors and everyday French.
Natural French is a combination of vocabulary, rhythm, sentence patterns and conversational habits. You do not need to imitate a native speaker; you need to stop translating every sentence from your first language.
Learn phrases as units
Store useful chunks such as ça dépend de…, je me rends compte que… and en ce qui me concerne… as complete patterns.
Use ordinary language first
Fancy vocabulary is not a substitute for control. A simple sentence produced quickly and accurately is more useful than an ambitious sentence you cannot finish.
Listen to fillers
Conversation includes small markers such as bon, alors, en fait and euh. Learn what they do rather than copying them mechanically.
Notice register
French changes according to the setting. A phrase that works with friends may not be the best choice in a formal email. Natural does not mean casual in every context.
Repeat with variation
Say the same idea three ways: simple, more developed and more conversational. This builds flexible retrieval rather than memorised paragraphs.
