How to Train Your French Ear Every Day

A simple daily listening routine for improving French comprehension, connected speech recognition and recall.

Listening improves when you train the ear deliberately. A short routine repeated frequently can target recognition, rhythm and recall more effectively than passive exposure alone.

The 20-minute routine

  1. 5 minutes: listen once for the gist.
  2. 5 minutes: replay short sections and note what you actually hear.
  3. 5 minutes: compare with a transcript.
  4. 5 minutes: repeat selected phrases aloud.

Choose material slightly above comfort

If every word is unfamiliar, you are testing survival rather than building recognition. Choose short material where you understand the topic but still miss some language.

Keep a “heard it” notebook

Write down expressions you recognise only after seeing the transcript. These are excellent targets because the vocabulary is already close to your active knowledge.

Repeat the same audio

Repetition is not cheating. It lets your brain shift from decoding to automatic recognition. Use one clip for several days before replacing it.

Keep building your French.
